Sinners is an American horror film written and directed by Ryan Coogler. Coogler teams up with Michael B. Jordan once again to create a horror film with layers, depth and mesmerising music.

Set in 1932 Mississippi, Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan in dual roles as twin brothers Smoke and Stack who return to their hometown to start again and open a juke joint, however on their opening night they are confronted by a supernatural evil. The film also follows the twins cousin Sammie, also known as Preacher Boy, who is an aspiring bluesman with a captivating voice. The film takes inspiration from Mississippi bluesman Robert Johnson who is said to have sold his soul to the devil at a crossroads in exchange for the mastery of the guitar.

Michael B. Jordan delivers an incredible dual performance, capturing the differences between the two brothers and their distinct personalities. The supporting cast are also amazing, (Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell and Wunmi Mosaku) they all add layers and emotional depth to the story. They all bring complexity to their roles, no supporting character is just a background character they all bring an important element to each scene they are in.

What I loved about this film is the use of music. Sinners is a tale of supernatural evil and the blues. Ludwig Göransson composed the film's score and he created a mesmerising soundtrack that elevated intense moments. The music plays such an important role in the film, it becomes a character in its own right, it is used to represent culture and how it can be stolen and taken away from its true meaning. The film includes amazing music sequences, but the one that stuck out to me the most was the one-shot music sequence in the juke joint, we see everyone dancing freely to the blues music as Sammie's use of the blues music connects him to his ancestors and to his future.

Sinners is an incredible, thrillingly unpredictable, southern gothic horror film. With beautiful cinematography and amazing storytelling it isn't just a film about a supernatural evil but about a community, racism and music. I have not seen a film like this in a while, it is a bold achievement and a true original film that grips you from beginning to end. And don't miss that post-credits scene- it's worth staying for!
