Nosferatu is directed by Robert Eggers and is a retelling of FW Murnau's 1922 German expressionist silent film 'Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror'. It is a gothic tale of obsession, following a haunted young woman and a vampire infatuated by her. It stars Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Bill Skarsgård, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin and Willem Dafoe.

It follows a similar plot as the original 1922 film. Set in the 1830s in Germany, it opens with young Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp) praying for answers to ease her loneliness, but instead of an angel answering her it is a mysterious creature who attacks her leaving her convulsing. Years later newlyweds Ellen and Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult) are living a happy life until estate agent Thomas travels to Transylvania to meet with Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård) a prospective client. Once Thomas leaves his bride, Ellen becomes plagued by visions and a sense of dread that something evil is coming for her.

All the cast bring amazing performances to this film, especially Bill Skarsgård he is unrecognisable as Count Orlok, his deep, raspy voice is spine-chilling. The reveal of Count Orlok is thrilling, we start with only hearing his whispering voice, until we are shown his unsettling physicality that brings a terrifying force to every scene he is in. Lily-Rose Depp is phenomenal as Ellen, she is physically committed to the role, the way her body and face contorts when she has seizures is chilling to watch. Depp's face is full of sadness throughout the film, she perfectly encapsulates the tragic heroine figure. This is a career defining moment for her, and watching her become consumed by Count Orlok is mesmerising.

Nosferatu is an erotic, gothic film. Eggers creates an unsettling and haunting atmosphere throughout the film, the film is beautifully grotesque especially the final scene with Count Orlok and Ellen. The cinematography and production design is immersive and captivating, and the use of lighting in the dark scenes adds to the gothic undertone of the film. This visual production is accompanied by a chilling score, with haunting melodies throughout each scene. Nosferatu is a must-watch for fans of the horror and gothic genre, it is packed with stellar performances, and Eggers successfully creates a beautifully terrifying and erotic relationship between the Count and Ellen.
